An AI visibility score summarizes how often an organization appears across a defined set of generated answers. A transparent score states which queries or prompts were tested, on which platforms, and what counts as an appearance. It should support the evidence, not replace the captured answers, citations, competitors and sentiment behind it.
What is the simplest AI visibility score?
The simplest score is a presence rate:
Presence rate = answers that mention the organization ÷ all tested answers × 100
If a clinic appears in 8 of 20 tested answers, its presence rate for that defined test is 40%. This is a hypothetical calculation, not a Rotgar result or a benchmark.
The denominator must remain clear. A score based on one market, language and service cannot be compared casually with a score covering several locations and specialties.
Should mentions and citations have the same score?
Not necessarily. A mention, citation and recommendation describe different outcomes. One combined score is convenient, but it can hide whether the organization is merely named or actively presented as a provider option.
A clearer report keeps separate rates:
- mention rate: answers that name the organization;
- citation rate: answers that visibly link to or use the organization’s page as a source;
- recommendation rate: answers that present the organization as an option;
- competitor gap rate: answers that name a competitor while omitting the organization;
- sentiment distribution: how positive, neutral, unfavorable or inaccurate descriptions are distributed.
If a weighted score is added, document the weights. There is no universal official AI visibility score.
Should Google AI Overviews and assistants share one score?
They may be summarized in one dashboard, but their underlying measurements should remain separate. Google AI Overviews are tested against search queries. ChatGPT and Gemini are tested against prompts and may involve follow-up stages.
Report Door 2 and Door 3 independently first. A combined executive number can then be calculated from clearly labeled components, but it should not imply that a Google AI Overview citation and a ChatGPT recommendation are identical events.
How do you keep the score comparable?
Preserve the test design between measurement periods:
- Keep the same priority question or prompt set unless the scope is deliberately revised.
- Record the market and language.
- Record the platform and visible product or model label.
- Apply the same mention, citation, recommendation and sentiment rules.
- Retain the dated answer capture for review.
- Annotate meaningful platform or scope changes.
When the question set changes, establish a new version of the baseline rather than presenting the two numbers as a clean trend.
What is a good AI visibility score?
There is no defensible universal threshold. A “good” result depends on the relevance of the tested questions, the market, the competitive set and the type of appearance.
The most useful comparisons are:
- the clinic against its own baseline;
- the clinic against named competitors under the same conditions;
- one service or market against another within the same measurement method;
- presence versus citation versus recommendation over time.
A high score on irrelevant informational prompts is less useful than a lower score on questions that closely match patient decisions.
What an AI visibility score cannot tell you
The score does not prove clicks, qualified enquiries or appointments. It cannot explain why an answer changed without reviewing its sources and content. It cannot be compared directly across tools that use different prompt universes and formulas. And it cannot forecast future citations.
For those reasons, Rotgar begins with captured results and uses scoring only as a summary. See the complete AI visibility measurement method and the definition of AI visibility.
